Press releases
GFKT issues press releases on milestone steps such as filing its groundbreaking petition to the High Court of Justice against Israel’s small arms policy. We also distribute press releases on particularly pronounced outcomes of the destructive and lethal small arms policies. Our past press releases, 19 in number and issued from 2011, are mostly in Hebrew only and are all available on the Hebrew version of this page.
Media coverage – an overview
Over most of its existence, GFKT has featured in the media consistently, both in mainstream and alternative venues, literally pushing gun control from ‘non-issue’ to hot issue status in Israel and keeping it there. Typically and sadly, killings and incidents of gun violence which are particularly shocking or close together generate peaks in media interest in our work. GFKT is recognized as an expert authority on gun violence and gun control in Israel by multiple media outlets (including Newsweek and the New York Times that approached us as consultants on a 2018 article). Such recognition for a feminist project presenting a feminist analysis is a rare accomplishment in the field of security-related topics.
While most media coverage of GFKT action and analyses is published in Hebrew, we have also generated substantial coverage in Arabic, a meaningful selection of items in English, a few articles in Russian and German and one in Dutch. (See below for a selection of English items.)
Gun Free Kitchen Tables on Partners’ Media Channels
GFKT takes pride in the changing discourse and consciousness of feminist and civil society organizations, whose websites, Facebook pages, etc. increasingly include small arms policy, gun control and GFKT actions. On initiating GFKT, this large, activist, influential segment of civil society viewed small arms proliferation as a non-issue (with the exception of open-fire policies in the occupied territories). Through the work of the GFKT Coalition, more and more organizations are discerning and presenting the impacts of small arms in civil space, along with the gendered and socially stratified risks they pose. GFKT’s presence and messages on organizational new media form a meaningful part of our overall media exposure.
